Bungoma High School Student Sponsorship
Bungoma High School is a Muslim based school but over 30% of students are non-Muslim. The school prioritizes the education of students from the surrounding areas, mostly slum areas, over religious denomination. The school is run by a very enthusiastic and highly competent Principal, Oliver Kituyi. Oliver has devoted his live to the education of his students and to the improvement of school facilities and standards. The school, like the primary schools of the other community-based organizations, provides students with a good level of education, one meal per day and a safe, supportive environment.
What we have noticed however is that is a very different set of issues facing secondary school students. Many children of that age either choose not to attend secondary school, primarily because of lack of funds to pay the school fees, or are forced not to by parents who need the income that these children can bring by taking menial jobs on farms or in the town. Subsequently, if the child can overcome those barriers, and enrol in the school, the payment of school fees becomes the main challenge, with some students being forced to take jobs such as ‘bicycle-taxis’ for many hours each day, or some other feel forced to enter into prostitution as a means of paying the fees. Oliver does his best to mitigate these dangers for students by installing basic payment plans, cutting costs where he can, or even allowing some students to waive fees altogether. However, the school can naturally not survive without these fees.
Our goal is to support as many of these students as we can by sponsoring their secondary education. Bungoma Secondary School students have expressed a strong desire to generate friendships with people from other countries, so anyone who sponsors a student will immediately have a very enthusiastic pen-pal, as well as information from us on the background of the student and ongoing updates on their progress.
