“To fight HIV/AIDS, provide primary school education, encourage microenterprise development for women and provide healthcare for the people of Western Kenya without regard to religion, politics, ethnicity or nationality.”

The recent initiatives undertaken at ICODEI by CAN are:
Funding the Mombasa Poetry Competition trip! A group of primary students from Epico Jahns qualified for the national finals of the recent poetry competition in Mombasa. Thanks to efforts from friends and family, we managed to raise enough to fund their trip (see Fundraising details - 97,000 KES) and as it was so successful, we aim to make the trip a yearly activity for the school. Not alone did the kids and teachers work extremely hard to get as far as the finals, but for most of them it was a trip of a lifetime and the renewed sense of optimism, hope and diligence is infectious! Getting to paddle around and swim in the Indian Ocean and travel around Mombasa was a dream come true for both teachers and students alike, and they ended up coming 4th in the country overall!!! The students earned a score of 87.5, and the winners 90. This was a remarkable achievement considering most of the students come from very impoverished backgrounds, and were competing with much larger private and public schools. We're looking forward to seeing how they will do again next year!

Painting of the EpicoJahnsPrimary School and cementing the floors. After a 2 week break, the children recently came back to a freshly painted and cemented school! Both the walls and floors of the school were in an extremely dilapidated condition, with the 'craters' on the floors of the classrooms having been complete health hazards. The excitement on the students faces when they arrived back was delightful, and combined with the enthusiasm of the Mombasa trip, should make for a year with a very motivated bunch of kids and teachers!

Collaboration with Equity Bank. As part of the Micro-Enterprise Development Programme (MDP), volunteers at ICODEI who are members of our organization were able to create an official partnership with Equity Bank, a major micro-financing institution. Microfinance is a powerful new tool of economic empowerment which has built tremendous momentum among people too poor to be considered bankable the world over. To assist Equity in this mission, ICODEI will provide free business training which will improve the ability of micro-entrepreneurs to generate income from the activities made possible by microfinance, from small scale agro-business to carpentry and construction. We are proud that our networking provided the basis for this alliance between the two groups.
Empowering Women. The program is aimed at educating young women in the local community on the topics of reproductive health, contraception, nutrition, and combating HIV. Two volunteers from the US shall be heading-up a series of 4-day workshops for women - a much needed locally-based activity that aims not only to train but to make graduates qualified to go on and teach on any of these crucial subject matters.
