Kanyala Little Stars
On visiting Kanyala Little Stars, you can’t but be impressed with how much they have achieved with the extremely limited resources they have. The school, made entirely from corrugated sheets of metal, houses approximately 160 happy, hard-working and enthusiastic students. Little Stars is a primary school run by community members for the benefit of the neediest children in the area, so it has taken in the children in the most dangerous or disadvantaged situations. Most of the students are classed as Orphaned and Vulnerable Children (OVCs) and come from very difficult backgrounds – being completely orphaned, from households run by children, or HIV+ (Not that it is easily recognizable from the enthusiastic and happy faces of the children in the School). By being a part of Kanyala Little Stars the children receive a primary education, one nutritious meal a day and a caring, supportive, safe environment.
School Books Project
Each class has been operating with approximately 2 books per subject, for an average of 20 kids per class. We recently purchased an additional 5 books per subject, and our goal now is to ensure that every student has their own copy of each subject’s relevant text book. This investment will ensure many uses of the books, as they will be passed down and re-used by new students.
