Little Stars Scholarship Fund

Kanyala Little Stars is a primary school with the social mission of serving orphaned and vulnerable children in one of the poorest provinces in Kenya. It is proud of its many bright pupils who have excelled in their education. After finishing grade 8, several of these children aspire to attend government-run high schools, a diploma from which can open up many employment opportunities and access to student loans at the university level. Unlike the US and Canada, secondary school in Kenya is not free, and many of these students have no financial backing to pay the fees to attend.
The CAN team is proud to announce the launch of our Scholarship Fund which will sponsor many of the children of Kanyala Little Stars to continue with their studies. It is divided into two types of support:
- Scholarships: Merit based, these scholarships will allow children who excel in their studies to go on to Provincial and National schools, from which the likelihood of acceptance for applicants to university becomes much greater, and through which financial support for further studies becomes available from the government. Scholarships would cover 75% of the cost of attending a Provincial school including tuition, room and boarding. Scholarships are $400 per year, for a total of 1,600 per child for four years of study.
- Bursaries: To be awarded on the basis of need, this support will allow orphaned and vulnerable children at Kanyala, who would not otherwise continue their studies, to attend local secondary schools. A highly performing child with no financial support at home might become a beneficiary of both a Scholarship and a Bursary to cover the full cost of study. Bursary amounts are variable and determined on a case by case basis depending on the child's situation.
We are looking for your support! As the first class will be graduating on December 2012, we are currently requesting from our partners and donors make pledges to sponsor children, so we can make all necessary arrangements and be ready to give as many of these children as possible a chance to continue their studies.
