To enhance the well-being of the girl child in a holistic manner through development and self-sustaining projects in order to help girls and women realize their full potential.

Recent Activities at Mama na Dada:

Circle of Hope Day Care.  Recently, we paid a visit to the Mama na Dada Centre in Kunya and got to meet the kids and guardians first hand - and in return for their lovely meal of nyama choma, ugali and sukuma wiki we introduced them to the joys of our own spaghetti and tomato sauce!  It was a pleasure to spend time with the completely lovable kids and very worthwhile to speak with the two Rosemary's who are operating the school. The school is very much in need of resources, so we asked for a list of books immediately required (see: Fundraising Details - 4,500 KES).  This of course is just a start and our aim is to supply the school with all the resources and books they require.

Guardians Project.  Kenya has been devastated by the AIDS pandemic, which has left in its wake countless orphaned children, and Nyanza province has been hit harder than most. Banding together to improve the fate of the vulnerable kids who have fallen under their care, the guardians of the Daycare's children have begun a Self-help group.

While visiting the school, we held a business seminar that aimed to teach them how to keep records of all their economic activity.  The ongoing drought has seriously hampered both their agricultural and fishery projects.  Just like Kanyala Little Stars, are desperately in need of a practical, workable irrigation system for their crops.  We have arranged for a representative of KickStart - the company that developed the Money Maker Irrigation Pump which has had a tremendous effect in improving the livelihoods of farmers in drought stricken areas throughout East Africa - to pay them a visit in the coming weeks.  Should the guardians opt to take that route, supporting them in attaining a number of these pumps will become one of our priorities.  For information on this remarkable technology, visit www.kickstart.org

Feeding Program at the Mama na Dada Daycare Centre. Due to the prolonged drought that struck Kenya in 2007-9, the otherwise self sustaining feeding program at this community centre in Nyanza province was at the verge of shutting down, which would have spelled terrible hunger for the children there who depend on it.  To help Mama na Dada deal with the rapidly increasing price of food staples, CAN already contributed $2,200 towards the program, which has helped them to sustain the program during this difficult time.  This will soon be followed by a Food Security Initiative, in which CAN will invest in seeds and irrigation systems that will allow Mama na Dada to greatly increase the yield of their crops, thus moving the village closer to food security.
