Mama na Dada Children’s Welfare Program

In addition to providing the children of the Circle of Hope Daycare Center with free healthcare, education and a warm, loving environment, Mama na Dada also makes sure that the children are properly nourished, and for most, the only meal they get a day is at the Daycare Center.

Generations of poverty and lack of education have left many unaware of what proper nutrition is, how to grow food to meet nutritional needs and how to farm in a way that provides long-term food security.  For the Kunya community, the biggest challenge they face is hunger.

Although the village is situated on Lake Victoria, Western Kenya, there is only one planting season, with the majority of people relying on the cultivation of maize.  Despite the potentials and value of African indigenous vegetables and crops, communities in Western Kenya continue to languish in poverty and face social and economic devastations.

Mama na Dada has been promoting the re-introduction of African indigenous vegetables and crops to ensure food security all year round.  The organization has started a demonstration farm of approximately 4 hectares to educate and train Kunya community members on healthy, practical and sustainable farming and livestock methods.  They have planted different indigenous vegetables and tubers as follows:
  • Cowpeas
  • Spider plant
  • Slenderleaf
  • African nightshades
  • Jute mallow
  • Vegetable amaranthus
  • Pumpkin and  leaves
  • African kale
  • Cassava
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Green bananas

In May 2004, Mama Na Dada received a donation of US$5,000 to purchase hybrid goats for the purpose of producing milk. They have also recently begun to raise rabbits and chickens.  All these provide an incredible nutritional boon to the sustaining nutritional meals provided to the Circle of Hope Daycare Center children.

Mama na Dada Children’s Welfare Program $2,000

This goal of raising $2,000 will allow Mama na Dada to purchase and cultivate livestock, seeds, grains and other agricultural supplies so that the children of the Circle of Hope Daycare Centre to be assured of a sufficient supply of food.  In addition, it will allow the young students receive educational materials and clothing.
